The collaboration on the 2010 Call “Effective Asset Management meeting Future Challenges" - the third cross-border funded joint research programme - started with the decision of National Road Administrations to collaborate on the joint research programme.

13 National Road Administrations from Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Lithuania, The Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom are the Programme owners. The Programme Management is led by the Danish Road Directorate (Denmark). Total Funding Budget is EUR 2,85 Mio, financed by 13 members.

20 project proposals were submitted and 7 projects are financed within .

Seven countries took part in the project: Sweden (Leader), Austria, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

The total Budget of the call for tender was 126.000 EUR. Six Tenders were submitted and the following one was financed by the countries:

Project coordinator: PMS-Consult, Dr. A. Weninger-Vycudil, Engineering Office for Traffic and Infrastructure, in cooperation with Prof. J. Litzka, Vienna, Austria (project leader)

Partners:

  • Institute for Transport Planning and Systems (IVT) Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETHZ), Zurich, Switzerland (co-project leader)
  • DDC Consulting and Engineering Ltd., Ljubljana, Slovenia
  • Heller Engineering Ltd., Darmstadt, Germany
  • Viagroup Ltd.Co., Winterthur, Switzerland

Start and Duration: 01 May 2008, ended in 15.May 2009, 12 month duration

Short Description of Project:

The maintenance of road network has become a highly important part of the road management in industrialized countries. The road network is quite well developed, and preservation of the asset must be secured. The objectives of maintenance are upkeep and restoration of road network condition to counterbalance its deterioration due to weather, traffic, aging etc. The results of the maintenance effort must be measured to assess to what degree the objectives are achieved and also to assess the effectiveness of maintenance (doing the right things in the right way).

The Final Report of PO3 Maintenance Backlog Estimation and Use was successfully finished in May 2009 and you can find it here.

PO2 Optimisation of Thin Asphalt Layers

E-mail Print PDF

Total Budget of Call for Tender: 110.000 EUR

Project coordinator and partners:

Statens väg och transportforskningsinstitut, VTI Robert Karlsson

Transport Research Laboratory, TRL

Vienna University of Technology

Objectives of the project

As given in the call for tender, the objective of the project is to:

- produce a state of the art report, and

- recommendations,

- concerning the use of “thin applications” of hot mixtures (thicknesses from 10 to 30 mm) as surface courses.

Project outline

The project is organised in five work packages (WP). One partner is assigned as the leader of each WP, but every partner will work in each WP. The mix of partners from Austria, UK and Sweden ensure that a wide variety of traffic, climate and material conditions as well as pavement management practice is covered within the project. The geographical spread also maximise the contact network area.

The first stage of the work will involve the following two parallel tasks:

- Undertake a literature review covering most relevant literature worldwide (WP1).

- Prepare an inventory by questionnaire in all the ERA-NET Road countries (WP2).

The second stage will consist of the following tasks:

- Develop an inventory of issues related to the construction and performance of thin asphalt layers that is restricted primarily to Sweden, UK and Austria (WP3)

- Draft and finalise a state-of-the-art report (WP4)

Questions and outcome

The purpose of the project is to identify problems, keys to success, needs for development and benefits of thin asphalt applications. The interviews will include a structured part based on previously identified issues, and an open part in which new issues can be raised.

These interviews will form a foundation for recommendations on future practice and direction of development. Consequently, it is important to develop the structured part of the interviews in such a way that they will reflect the opinion of experts on future development.
